Commercial Beekeeping App: How SunnyBee Manages Large-Scale Apiaries

From 50 hives to 380 — how commercial beekeepers use SunnyBee to track inspections, costs, harvests, team tasks, and pollination contracts across multiple apiaries.

The Difference Between Hobby and Commercial Beekeeping

A beekeeper managing 10 hives in a backyard can keep records in a notebook and move hives by hand. A commercial operation with 150–380 hives across three or four apiaries cannot. The gap is not just scale — it is the number of variables that must be tracked simultaneously: which apiaries need inspection this week, which colonies are at risk, which treatments are due, what the per-hive cost of production looks like across the season, and whether the team has completed their tasks.

SunnyBee was built for this level of complexity. This guide covers how commercial beekeepers use it to run a structured, data-driven operation — from multi-apiary management and team coordination to pollination contracts and financial tracking.

Multi-Apiary Management at Scale

On the PREMIUM and PRO plans, SunnyBee supports up to 3 or 5 apiaries respectively, with up to 380 hives per account. Each apiary is managed independently with its own hive list, inspection history, weather forecast, and expense ledger — but the dashboard rolls everything up into a single view.

Every apiary on the map shows its GPS coordinates, hive count, and current health summary. The interactive map shows foraging circles around each apiary location so you can evaluate overlap and forage competition between your sites before moving hives.

The apiary detail screen shows which hives are HEALTHY, AT_RISK, or NEEDS_ATTENTION, and the most recent inspection date per hive. In a 70-hive apiary, you need this at a glance — not buried in individual hive records.

Hive Inspections: Quick Mode and Full Mode

Commercial inspections are different from hobby inspections. You need to cover a lot of hives quickly without skipping the observations that matter. SunnyBee's inspection form offers two modes:

  • QUICK mode: Core observations in under 60 seconds — queen seen, eggs spotted, queen cells, varroa estimate, mood, immediate actions. Designed for routine walkthroughs where you need to flag anything unusual without stopping to enter per-frame data.
  • FULL mode: Complete frame-by-frame breakdown — brood frames, honey frames, pollen, queen excluder, supers added, per-box level detail, honey level, brood level. Full mode is for thorough spring and autumn assessments and any colony where something seems off.

Both modes include automatic task generation: if queen cells are recorded, SunnyBee immediately creates a 72-hour URGENT task and sends a SWARM_ALERT push notification. If eggs are spotted, it calculates Day 9 and Day 21 task reminders for cell capping and emergence. These biological timeline tasks fire as push notifications at 8:10 AM on their due date.

Voice inspection — available on PREMIUM and PRO apiaries — lets you dictate observations hands-free while working the hive. Groq Whisper transcribes and structures the data automatically, which is a meaningful time saving when you are managing dozens of hives in a session.

Team Management Across Multiple Apiaries

PRO accounts can add up to 5 team members, each with role-based access per apiary: ADMIN, MODERATOR, or VIEWER. This maps directly to how commercial operations work — a field technician who inspects hives should not have access to financial records; a business partner might need read-only visibility into all operations.

When a team member logs in for the first time, SunnyBee sends an ADMIN_MESSAGE notification to the account owner. If a user logs in from a new device while another session is active, the previous session is automatically invalidated — preventing shared credential abuse across a team.

Team tasks with push reminders ensure that inspection-triggered actions (swarm prevention, treatment due dates, emergence checks) are visible to whoever is responsible that day — not just the person who opened the app last.

Cost Tracking and Per-Hive Economics

Commercial viability depends on knowing your numbers. SunnyBee's expense system tracks all production costs: treatments (varroa, antibiotics), feeding (sugar, syrup, pollen substitutes), equipment purchases, transport, labour, and hive repairs. Each expense can be linked to a specific apiary or hive, so you can calculate the actual cost of production per hive per season.

The expense summary screen shows totals by category and by apiary, giving you a clear picture of which apiaries are profitable and which are carrying disproportionate treatment or feeding costs.

Harvest records work the same way — log each harvest with weight, honey type, apiary, and hive (optional), and the harvest summary calculates your total output and average yield per hive. Compare this against your expense total and you have a basic profitability calculation per apiary per season, directly in the app.

All currency is in Albanian Lek (L) with integer precision. The app does not include foreign currencies or conversion — it is designed for the Albanian market.

Treatment and Feeding Schedules

Varroa management across a large operation requires keeping pharmaceutical records for every treatment — product name, batch number, start date, end date, and result. SunnyBee's treatment tracking stores this automatically, which is increasingly required for veterinary compliance.

Feeding records track what was fed (sugar syrup, fondant, pollen substitute), quantity, and date per hive or apiary. For commercial operations that feed all colonies simultaneously before winter, the apiary-level entry saves significant time versus per-hive logging.

Tasks generated by inspections (treatment due, feeding due, follow-up check) appear in the task list with priority levels: LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, URGENT. The 8:10 AM cron job sends push reminder notifications for tasks with a reminderTime set — so the team starts each day knowing what needs attention.

Inventory Management

PRO accounts have access to the inventory module, which tracks equipment and supplies: frames, foundation, hive boxes, queens, medications, feeding equipment. Each item has a stock count, and movements (ADDITION, USAGE, TRANSFER between apiaries) are logged with timestamps.

For commercial operations, this prevents the common problem of discovering mid-season that you are short on frames or that a medication batch has expired. Inventory visibility is a basic operational requirement at scale.

Analytics and Seasonal Intelligence

The analytics screen aggregates performance data across all your apiaries and hives. Key metrics include colony health score trends, inspection frequency, varroa load over time, treatment history, and harvest yield per apiary. For PREMIUM and PRO users, historical data retention is 180 or 365 days respectively — enough to compare this season against the last and identify which apiaries consistently underperform.

The insights engine surfaces operational decisions automatically: which hive ranked highest in honey production this season, which colony has the longest varroa-treatment-free interval, which apiary produced the best yield per hive. These are not just numbers — they are the inputs you need to make split, requeen, and relocation decisions next season.

Export and Reporting

PRO accounts can export data to Excel, which gives you the raw dataset for external analysis, grant applications, or pharmaceutical record submissions. PDF export (PREMIUM and PRO) generates formatted hive records and inspection reports for veterinary or compliance inspections.

The bulk import feature is available on all plans — upload a spreadsheet of hives and the system creates them all at once, saving hours of manual data entry when you first set up an account.

Who SunnyBee is Built For

SunnyBee targets commercial beekeepers in the Albanian market who are operating between 50 and 380 hives across multiple sites. The app handles the full operational workflow: inspection → task generation → team notification → treatment record → harvest log → financial summary. Everything is in Albanian by default with English available.

If you manage more than one apiary and find yourself losing track of inspection schedules, treatment due dates, or per-apiary costs, SunnyBee is designed specifically for that problem. The PRO plan removes the constraints that make hobby tools impractical at commercial scale.
